Whole Foods made a prediction of food trends for 2020. We are taking one of these and we will dive deeper into these alternative flours. From teff flour used for Ethiopian injera, tigernut flour, seed flour, to interesting fruit and vegetable flours (even banana). Even “super” flours delivering fiber and proteins.
We know people are trying to get in and out fast in the supermarket (minimizing any risk of contamination) while navigating the “one way” signs on the lanes. Staying as close as possible to items on the shopping list. Nevertheless, have you caught a glance of all these new flours appearing in the baking aisles? Yes, you will find them in the already bakes products such as crust and snacks. Even Tigernut flour tortilla chips! Many of you are are taking this time to let your creative and adventure self come out and using these at home. Cudos!
There can be many reasons to substitute traditional all purpose flour. From shortage to allergies and dietary preference. Thankfully today there are so many choices for you to choose from and each may suit a different purpose. They can add flavor, texture and nutritional value to different baked items. Just keep in mind that you can not swap out the all purpose flour for one of these flours and obtain the same result. You may need to combine a couple of these, or add more liquid, a binder or more eggs. So we encourage you to follow a recipe or research the combinations before doing your own experiments.
We will expand in more articles how to use some of these: Almond flour; Coconut flour; Quinoa flour; Chickpea flour; Brown Rice flour; Oat flour; Spelt flour; Buckwheat flour; Rye flour; Amaranth flour; Teff flour; Millet flour
