Pretzels… “little arms”

April 26th is National Pretzel Day and, as my curiosity is always hungry, I was wondering how this treat came to be. To my surprise I learned that this food is fruit of love and encouragement.

Legend has it that Italian monks during Medieval times (610 A.D.) created this treat to reward children at school for reciting their prayers correctly. They baked them in the shape of little arms crossed in prayer.

During the Middles Ages the form of this pretzel turned into a symbol of good luck, prosperity and spiritual fulfillment. Pretzels were distributed among the poor of a way to nourish their bodies and soul.

These interlocking loops were also viewed as a symbol of love and so legend has it that in Switzerland couples would use this during their wedding ceremonies to seal the bond and this, thereafter the phrase of “Tie the Knot”was originated.

We have found some recipes for you to try at home. The secret is to make it with love.
